Whatsapp statement as millions of users unable to send or receive messages for almost four hours

Users across the world have been left frustrated as Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram have crashed for almost four hours.

These three social media giants - all owned by Facebook - are reported to have gone down on Monday evening after 4pm and still have not got back up and running.

According to CNN, this incident marks the worst outage for Facebook since 2008 when a bug knocked the website offline for 24 hours which affected around 80 million users.

In a statement on their official Twitter account, Whatsapp thanked users for their patience as they tried to get to the route of the issue at 5.16pm.

It read: "We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!"

Tens of thousands of people have been struggling to access WhatsApp with 46,397 issues reported at about 4:30pm.

That shot up to 75,600 just before 5pm with a total of 43% of users experiencing issues with the app, with 27% being unable to send messages.
