WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook down as thousands report problems

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram appear to be down with thousands reporting a major outage.

On Twitter, users from all over the globe posted messages asking what had happened to the social media services, that have millions of users worldwide.

For WhatsApp, users have reported being unable to send messages, or open the service on desktop computers.

The same applies to Facebook and Instagram.

Downdetector.co.uk has recorded a surge in reports about the messaging app, and social media sites.

Mobile and web customers say they are receiving a 'not connecting' message when they try to send texts.

The spike in reports took place shortly after 5.30pm.
