WhatsApp group chats could be shaken up by 'sneaky' new feature

A new WhatsApp feature could allow users to silently leave group chats without alerting other members.

Anybody that's been stuck in a chat that's busy, irrelevant, annoying - or all of the above - will be breathing a sigh of relief.

The move could ease social politics in the group chats that are widespread on the social messenger platform used by an estimated two billion people worldwide.

WABetaInfo, an independent site covering WhatsApp news, reported the feature is undergoing development.

There is a catch though - it is said group admins will be notified of a member's departure, so the exit won't entirely go unnoticed.

It comes as the app rolled out the ability this month to add up to 512 users to groups.

The site shared an alleged screenshot of the feature that is reportedly not yet ready to be tested.

The notification reads: "Exit this group? Only you and group admins will be notified that you left the group."

The site explains: "This screenshot is very clear: when you want to exit a WhatsApp group, other people won't be notified in the chat.

"Only group admins will be able to see who exits the group, but others don't.

"What does it mean? When you exit a group, WhatsApp normally adds a system message in the chat to inform all participants that you exited the group: this information will only show up to group admins in the future.

"Group admins should always be notified about what happens in their groups, so it is needed to show them who exited a group."

WhatsApp is also reportedly readying a Premium subscription for business users.
