WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram down for thousands worldwide

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram went down for thousands of social media users as both sites crashed on Friday afternoon.

People all around the world struggled to access the popular sites.

Both Instagram and WhatsApp are part of Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook, which is said to have 2.8 billion active users.

More than 122,000 people had reported issues accessing Instagram in the past 24 hours, according to Downdetector.

While there had been over 23,000 reports for WhatsApp, as well as 3,000 for Facebook.

Issues were first raised by frantic users at at 3:30pm, with people using Instagram online being shown a simple error message saying '5xx Server Error'.

According to Downdetector, more than 50 per cent of users said there was a "total black out" as they tried accessing Facebook, while 24 per cent reported having log in issues and 23 per cent couldn't get their news feed.

Facebook Messenger app also seemed to be affected with more than 5,500 reports.

Facebook’s official “platform status” page, indicates the site is “healthy” .

Twitter and Instagram don't have their own designated platform status page.

It is the second time in just three weeks that Zuckerberg's apps go down for thousands of people, with Instagram and Facebook Messenger users reporting issues at the end of February.
