Online messaging service Whatsapp is experiencing an outage, with users unable to send or receive messages. The outage began shortly before 8:30am on Tuesday, October 25, and appears to be a worldwide issue.
The platform's parent company Meta - which also runs Facebook and Instagram - has issued a statement saying: "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages, and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible." It is currently not known how long the outage will last, however, the service has already been down for more than an hour. Website DownDetector showed a massive spike in people reporting the app not working for them on Tuesday morning.
At its peak, around 70,000 users were impacted by the outage. According to DownDetector, the issue most reported was the ability to send messages, with 55% of people impacted reporting problems with this element of the application. Around 40% reported an issue with the server, and 5% reported an issue with the app generally.
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms in the UK and around the world, and is estimated to have more than two billion active users globally. It appears as though the outage is a worldwide issue.
Commenting on a thread on the DownDetector website, one person said: "Down in Malaysia." Another said: "Unable to connect in Marlborough." And another commented from Newport, south Wales: "Mines down too not connecting at all."
Meta have not confirmed when it will be back up and running fully. No issues appear to be reported on sister websites.
