WhatsApp 'down' as thousands reports problems

The instant messaging service WhatsApp appears to be down with thousands reporting a major outage.

On Twitter, users from all over the globe posted messages asking what had happened to the service, which has millions of users worldwide.

People have reported being unable to send messages, or open the service on desktop computers.

Downdetector.co.uk has recorded a surge in reports about the messaging app.

Mobile and web customers say the app is not 'connecting' when they try to send messages.

Some 88% of the problems reported on downdetector are connection-related.

The spike in reports took place shortly after 8.30pm.

Thousands of Twitter users have shared funny memes expressing their shock at the outage using the hashtag #whatsappdown.
