WhatsApp 'Dance of the Pope' hoax is circulating - here's what to do if you receive it

A bizarre hoax message is doing the rounds on WhatsApp this week, that warns users about a video titled ‘Dance of the Pope.’

The message warns of a 'dangerous' video, and urges users to delete it if they receive it.

The message reads: “Please inform all contacts from your list not to open a video called the 'Dance of the Pope'," the message reads.

"It is a virus that formats your mobile. Beware it is very dangerous. They announced it today on BBC radio.

“Fwd this msg to as many as you can!"

The message is a hoax, and there has been no such announcement of a phone virus on BBC Radio.

It also remains unclear what the ‘Dance of the Pope’ video is, or if it even exists!

While the message is a hoax, worrying it seems that many confused recipients have forwarded it on to their friends this week.

Thankfully it doesn’t contain any malicious links, so can’t cause any damage to your smartphone.

However, if you receive it, we would advise that you delete it and don’t forward it on to any friends.

WhatsApp explained: “We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it.

“To avoid exposing your contacts to potential harm, please never forward these messages to them.”
