You know that feeling when you wake up and your brain has just served you the most bizarre cinematic scenes imaginable via your dreams? One minute you’re falling off a cliff, the next you’re back in high school without pants, and somehow your ex is there just to make things more hellish. Dreams are chaotic and confusing, but they’re rarely random, and always worth analysing.
For centuries, people have tried to decode what our subconscious gets up to while we sleep, and while not every dream is a prophetic message from the Universe, a lot of them do tap into very real emotions, anxieties and desires bubbling under the surface.
In fact, dreams are one of the only areas in which the worlds of spirituality and psychology intersect, as both mystics and psychologists agree that dreams carry great meaning about our waking lives and analysing them can help us better understand how we tick.
So, whether you’re constantly being chased, losing your teeth (rude), or living out a surprisingly vivid rom-com, here are the 10 most common dreams and what they might actually be trying to tell you.
The 10 most common dreams and what they’re trying to tell you
1. Falling
Dreaming about falling is usually less about the literal drop and more about the feeling that comes with it, that stomach-churning loss of control. It tends to crop up when something in your waking life feels unstable or uncertain, whether that’s work, relationships, finances, or even your own sense of direction. You might feel like you’re slipping in some way, second-guessing decisions, or struggling to keep up with expectations you’ve set for yourself.
It can also point to a fear of failure or letting people down, especially if you’re someone who likes to have a plan (or at least the illusion of one). Your brain basically takes that quiet, underlying anxiety and turns it into a very loud, very physical metaphor.
The takeaway isn’t that everything is falling apart, it’s that something might feel like it is. These dreams can be a nudge to slow down, reassess where you’re at, and figure out what’s actually within your control versus what you’re just trying to hold together out of habit.
2. Being chased
Dreams about being chased or hunted often point to avoidance in your waking life. Even if the threat in the dream feels unclear, the emotional tone usually suggests you’re running from something uncomfortable: a difficult conversation, an unresolved situation, or a decision you’ve been delaying. Your subconscious turns that avoidance into a literal pursuit, where whatever you’re trying to escape turns up again and again until it can’t be ignored.
These dreams can also show up during periods of pressure or change, when life feels like it’s closing in faster than you can keep up. If you’re the one doing the chasing, the meaning shifts slightly, it can reflect a pursuit of something external like success or validation, but also an internal tension, where you may be trying to reconnect with or understand a part of yourself you’ve been pushing away.
3. Teeth
Dreams of teeth are a reflection of how you’ve been communicating with others in your waking life. If you dream that your teeth are loose, this means you’ve been holding too much inside and you need to speak up or the outcome won’t be pretty. It also warns of incoming loss or failure.
If your chompers fall out, this is a sign that you have divulged sensitive information that should have been kept concealed and it may come back to bite you in the butt (no pun intended). It’s also a sign of stress, anxiety and losing control of your life. If you dream of having your teeth replaced, it may point to upcoming challenges that you won’t be able to handle alone and will need outside support to work through.

4. School
To dream that you are back in school is a sign that unresolved issues from your childhood are still haunting you in the present. You may be feeling insecure and doubtful of your abilities, just like you did during that time in your life, with old patterns of self-criticism or comparison resurfacing in the present day.
It may also reflect feeling left out from your peers, like everyone is moving at a different pace in life to you, or that you’re being measured against invisible standards you’re not sure you meet. In that sense, the school setting becomes symbolic of pressure and judgement, where you feel like you’re still trying to catch up or prove yourself.
5. Flying
To dream that you are flying often symbolises freedom and release, a sense that you’re breaking away from whatever feels restrictive in your waking life. It can reflect a period where you’re gaining perspective, stepping back from problems, or finally feeling like you’re no longer weighed down by certain expectations or emotional baggage.
It can also point to confidence and personal growth, especially if the flight feels smooth and in control. In that sense, flying represents rising above limitations, not just escaping them, but actively moving beyond what once held you back.
6. Being naked in public
To dream that you are naked often reflects feelings of vulnerability or the fear of being exposed. It can show up when you’re worried about being judged by others, like when you’re not fully prepared or you’re afraid something private about you might be revealed.
If other people are naked in the dream, the meaning can shift toward transparency and trust. It may suggest that someone isn’t being fully honest with you, or that there’s something in a relationship or situation that hasn’t been properly revealed yet. Alternatively, it can reflect your own sense that you’re not getting the full picture, that something is being concealed, either by others or even by yourself.
7. Running late
Dreams about being late often reflect pressure and anxiety around time and expectations. It can mirror the sense that responsibilities are piling up or that you’re constantly trying to catch up in some area of your life, whether that’s work, relationships, or personal goals.
These dreams can also tap into a deeper worry about missed opportunities or not being on track compared to where you think you should be. Your subconscious turns that stress into a literal race against time, highlighting the feeling that something important is slipping away unless you act quickly.
8. Death
To see death in a dream is a sign that you are on the verge of great change but you need to let go and release something in order to transform. If someone you know dies in a dream, this could indicate that your relationship with this person is shifting or that the change you will soon experience involves an aspect relating to this person. It could also be a warning that bad news is on its way, so beware!
Note: just like with Tarot, seeing death is not a literal sign that death is going to occur in real life, but rather the closing of a chapter. It’s not necessarily a bad omen, but more of a marker of change. In many cases, these dreams can actually signal growth, clearing out what no longer serves you, and making space for a new direction or identity to emerge.

9. Paralysed
Dreams where you feel paralysed often reflect a sense of being stuck or unable to act in your waking life. They can show up when you’re facing a situation where you feel blocked, uncertain, or like you don’t have the tools or confidence to move forward. It mirrors a psychological “freeze” response when something feels too overwhelming or hard to confront.
These dreams can also point to emotional overload, where pressure or stress leaves you feeling like any action is out of reach. Rather than signalling true powerlessness, they tend to highlight areas where you might be avoiding a decision or needing clarity before you can take the next step.
10. Car travel
When you dream of being in a vehicle, it’s important to analyse the vibe of the journey as this reflects the journey of your life. If you are in the driver’s seat, this says you are in control of your own fate and have the drive and determination to achieve your goals. If someone else is driving, this says that choices are being made for you.
If you feel comfortable and safe, rest assured that you have good influences around you and you are protected. If you feel unsafe, this denotes a loss of agency. If your overall journey is pleasant, good things will come your way.
If the car crashes or is stolen, there will be unexpected setbacks and delays. If the car gets a flat tyre, this is a sign that you are exhausted and need to slow down to avoid burnout. To get stuck in traffic signifies feeling trapped in a certain situation. If the car is out of control, this means your life is spiralling and you need to course correct by making positive changes.
Sweet dreams, mates!
