What you need to know about the Severn Bridge 10k and half marathon

Running a 10k or half marathon brings with it special memories. Especially if you happen to have views of the iconic Prince of Wales Bridge and the River Severn while you're jogging.

And that's just what hundreds of people will get this weekend as the Severn Bridge 10k and half marathon gets underway.

The running event takes place this weekend and as well as bringing a lot of interest for those taking part or speculating, it will be also be of interest to motorists with the Severn bridge being totally closed for the event.

Everything you need to know, including when and how long the roads will be closed for, are below.

When is it?

Both the half marathon and the 10k are on Sunday August 25. The half marathon starts at 9am, whereas the 10k starts at 10am.

The half marathon and 10k both start on the M48 Severn Bridge – but at different parts of it.

The races finish at the event village HQ – a grassy area overlooking the Bridge – where the baggage store, changing facilities, toilets, catering outlets and goody bag collection points are located.

Where does it start?

What roads will close?

The eastern bound carriageway of the M48 Severn Bridge between junctions 1 (Aust) and 2 (Chepstow) will be closed for a short time. Officially the closure is between 7:30am and 11:30am (but may be shorter than this).

The B4461 will also be closed between junction 1 of the M48 and a junction leading into Olveston in South Gloucestershire. This will be from 8:45am until approximately 12 noon.

There are cash prizes for those men and women that finish first (£100), second (£80), third (£65), fourth (£40) and fifth (£30) in the half marathon. The men and women that finish first to third will also receive specially commissioned bespoke trophies.

There are also cash prizes up for grabs for those men and women that compete in 10k: first place will get £60, second £40, third £30. The winning man and woman will also get a trophy, while there’ll be medals for those that finish second and third.
