What you need to do to be paid to sit on some of Wales’ most beautiful beaches this summer

It is probably one of the best office environments you can work in.

Golden sands, blue seas and picturesque views await those who will be helping to keep the beaches of Gower - and the rest of Wales - safe this summer.

And for those interested, the RNLI is now looking for recruits for the 2020 summer season, to work as lifeguards across the country, including in Bridgend , Swansea , Pembrokeshire , Ceredigion , Carmarthenshire and Denbighshire .

But while the surroundings will make office workers green with envy, the job is no easy task.

Amongst the beaches that need patrolling are Gower's Swansea Bay, Langland , Caswell , Three Cliffs and Port Eynon .

Elsewhere in Wales, lifeguards are also needed for Whitmore Bay, Llantwit Major , Southerndown, Ogmore, Pink Bay, Rest Bay, Coney/Sandy Bay, Trecco Bay and Aberavon.

But in order to apply for a role as a beach lifeguard, candidates need to hold a National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ) or equivalent.

A health assessment, including an eyesight test, is to ensure you are physically up to the job will be required.

And there’s also a mandatory swim test to be completed - which is no small feat.

The test involves:

• A 400m pool swim in under 7½ minutes, the first 200m of which must be completed in under 3½ minutes.

• A 25m pool swim underwater and a 25m surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds.

• A 200m beach run in under 40 seconds.

RNLI lifeguards responded to almost 20,000 incidents and helped more than 32,000 people in 2018.

Successful applicants receive training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques, and the chance to develop valuable skills for a future career.
