After two decades of conflict in Afghanistan Taliban militants took the capital on Sunday and have begun the process of solidating their control of the nation.
Kabul was seized by the Taliban after they spent weeks fighting Afghan military forces following the departure of British and American troops from the region.
In the midst of Kabul's seizure, the US-backed president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, fled the country and went to Tajikstan, effectively handing over the country to the Taliban.

The event has resulted in thousands of nationals and foreigners attempting to flee the country on flights from Kabul as they fear for their lives under the rule of the Taliban- approximately five people died in the attempt.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace fought back tears this morning as he informed the public that not everybody could be rescued from the situation as the government scrambles to evacuate British nationals from the country.
Campaigners are urging members of the British public to write to their MPs and demand assurance of safe passage for refugees escaping Afghanistan amid fears surrounding their safety.
Members of the public can also donate to charities that support the safe passage of Afghan refugees.

UNICEF has confirmed it's on the ground in Afghanistan and is delivering life-saving supplies to those in need.

The Mercy Corps is a humanitarian charity that focuses on providing aid in regions suffering from political instability and transferring situation.
The charity said that it's working quickly to provide clean water and sanitation to families that have fled Kabul and have vowed to stay 'as long and safely as we can' in the region.

Turquoise Mountain Trust
Former Tory MP Rory Stewart has set up a crowdfunder to help people suffering in Afghanistan.
He tweeted the link, saying: ‘Afghanistan has been betrayed into horror + it’s easy to feel helpless. But we can still support people on the ground. We have a small charity supporting a few 1000. Please donate if you can below. And there are, of course, many other great charities too.’
Proceeds will apparently go to the Turquoise Mountain Trust, which has been working in Afghanistan for the past 15 years.
The charity warned Afghanistan is facing a ‘humanitarian crisis’ but assured members of the public that it has a network of programmes and staff ‘that can provide support swiftly and effectively’ to the people in Afghanistan.

Refugee Action has spent the past 35 years supporting refugees trying to build new lives in the UK.
They're supporting the safe transfer of Afgan refugees into the country and are urging the government to guarantee the safety of Afghan's fleeing into the UK.
