The Atlanta Falcons might end up making it harder for the Cincinnati Bengals to keep star wide receiver A.J. Green in town.
Green has one more year left on his current deal and has made it known he doesn’t want to go anywhere. The two sides were public about not starting extension talks early, hence the lack of progress so far.
Those talks figure to ramp up soon, though they may not be as simple as last time. After all, Green is now going on 31 years old and has missed a large chunk of games in two of his past three seasons.
There is also a massive extension for Falcons star Julio Jones to consider:
That resets the market and will potentially come in at an average of $20 million per year.
The Bengals can afford this, of course. And Green made it easy on them last time by going right in line with Jones’ last extension.
But whether the Bengals want to is a different topic. Other than the aforementioned points, the team will presumably also want to get budding star Tyler Boyd an extension, too.
The Bengals didn’t hesitate with Geno Atkins or Carlos Dunlap extensions last season despite their age and major stars at those positions getting monster deals, so what happens with Jones in Atlanta may not matter too much as long as the Bengals come in close.
In this instance, the Bengals seemingly operating in their own vacuum of sorts may benefit them, so doom and gloom about an extension for Green isn’t advised.
