How Arsenal loanee William Saliba fared for Nice in the French Cup

William Saliba started for Nice as they beat Nimes in the French Cup third round.

The on-loan Arsenal defender has been a star performer for the Ligue One side since arriving in January, and recently picked up the Player of the Month award after his first few weeks at the club.

Nice now have three consecutive victories in all competitions and reach the last four of the French Cup for the first time since 2011.

Saliba was deployed at left centre back alongside Robson Bambu and put in an accomplished performance where he looked particularly adept at coming out with the ball and distributing to the midfielders ahead of him.

Rony Lopes opened the scoring for Nice on 13 minutes, before netting his second goal 15 minutes later.

Nimes winger Haris Duljevic got on the end of a Patrick Burner cross a few minutes later as the hosts sprung an impressive counter attack.

Pierre Lees-Melou secured the victory with ten minutes to go as Ursea's side capped off a fine attacking performance.

19-year-old Saliba was excellent in the 62 minutes he played. He made one clearance, one block, one interception but more importantly won his aerial duels (2 out of 2) and once showed his exemplary passing accuracy rate (90%).

Adrian Ursea's side dominated the game and sealed their place in the round of 32 along with a first away win in the competition since January 2014.

Nimes are currently at the foot of the Ligue 1 table and the difference in quality wasn't a huge surprise, but Saliba will be pleased with his overall performance once again.

Saliba's next game comes in no less than three days with Nice facing a mouthwatering clash against third placed Paris-Saint Germain on Saturday.
