What will happen when dentists reopen later this month?

Dental practises in England are preparing to reopen later this month.

Dentists have been closed for non-urgent appointments since the March 25, but will be allowed to reopen from June 8.

Patients who are due a check up may have to wait longer before getting an appointment however.

Initially, any urgent patients will be prioritised as surgeries reopen from next week, which means routine care appointments are unlikely to be available until later.

Dentists have said it will take at least several months for routine check-ups and cleanings to resume, depending on a number of factors.

Meanwhile, social distancing rules will mean that a trip to the dentist will look very different to how it would have done before the lockdown.

Due to enhanced cleaning practices and social distancing dentists will see fewer patients in one day.

Dave Cottam, a mixed practice dentist from Birmingham, told the PA news agency he expects to only be able to see six or eight patients each day, compared to between 20 and 30 previously.

Patients and staff will also be expected to keep 2m away from others where possible and personal protective equipment will be used.

Hand gel will be made available and one-way systems should be implemented to keep patients apart, according to guidance from the chief dental officer of England (CDO).

Magazines and toys will be removed from waiting rooms and patients may be asked to wait outside if social distancing can not be maintained inside.

While practices are reopening for face-to-face appointments, dentists will be expected to continue carrying our remote consultations where possible.

The CDO is also advising that staff are regularly screened for Covid-19 symptoms and guidance on self-isolating where necessary is strictly followed.
