What will happen to the daily press conference now that Boris Johnson has coronavirus?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised that a press conference will be held every day while the coronavirus pandemic continues.

He clearly saw the daily event as an important method of getting the Government's message across to the nation - and perhaps of ensuring the public could see that someone was in charge.

Even when it was decided that journalists shouldn't come in to Number 10 any more, the press conferences continued, with the media asking questions by video link.

But what happens now that Mr Johnson has coronavirus?

The first thing to remember is that he never promised to take part in every press conference personally.

In the past, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Matt Hancock have answered questions. Mr Hancock is now in isolation, because he also has coronavirus.

But Mr Sunak is still available. And today's press conference will feature the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Michael Gove.

There are other senior members of the Cabinet who can fill in for the Prime Minister. And it seems that is what's going to happen.

The plan for now is that the press conferences will still take place every day, with a member of the government taking part.

Mr Johnson is working from 11 Downing Street where he has an office with video-links, allowing him to communicate with colleagues.

We're told that he won't be attempting to use the video-link to hold press conferences. But in theory, that could be a option in the future.

And it's also possible that government scientists could address the public without any politicians being present.
