What will Dolphins’ on-boarding process for new coaches look like?

The Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff boasts a lot of fresh faces. There is no rest for the weary — Miami’s vetting and hiring process must now pivot into an on-boarding effort to ensure that the Dolphins have solidified their offseason plans before the critical windows of the 2020 NFL Draft process arrive. Most notably, the NFL Combine.

When general manager Chris Grier met with the media this past week in Mobile at the Senior Bowl, he was asked specifically about how the coaching hires will impact Miami’s ability to execute and be on the same page.

According to Grier, there is just critical component: communication. Any Dolphins fan that has listened to a single press conference from Brian Flores over the past 12 months would hardly be surprised to hear that.

“I think Brian and the staffs even previously have done a good job of when they all get here — we’ll get together, we’ll get in a room, we’ll talk about the traits and characteristics they want at each position, and we’ll go through it just like we always do,” said Grier.

“Again, you always have to make sure you’re on the same page of what everyone’s looking for and then that communication piece will be important. We have a couple months here, too, which is good.”

Indeed, Miami does have time. And they seem to have a promising chemistry. Grier and Flores both often reference how they speak together on a daily basis — so now it becomes a matter for formalizing the desired criteria for players to the rest of the new coaches on staff, while also getting input on what perspective the new coaches can bring to the table.

What is the timetable for getting that done? Probably next week, according to Grier.

“We’re meeting together as soon as we can with all of us in the room in early February and we’ll start preparing for the Combine and going through the types of players that they’re looking for.”
