What will £400,000 buy you in the UK property market?

What £400k buy: £400k home in Glasgow
This is a lavish testament to Victorian embellishment in Broomhill, Glasgow, although the decor could do with 21st-century help. Wood panelling, ornate plasterwork, fireplaces and a touch of stained glass are distributed through the three receptions, five bedrooms and turret study. The ceilings are lofty and full height bay windows expand the floor space. When you tire of your own back garden you can share in the residents’ pleasure grounds. Parking, though, is first-come-first-served on a busy main road, and not all the surrounding architecture is this elegant.

What £400k buy: £400k home in Ipswich
The preserved good looks of this corner house on the outskirts of Ipswich has earned it a Grade II-listing, which will impede daring ambitions. But if five bedrooms and four receptions cramp your style you can probably persuade the planners to let you convert the adjoining coach house from a garage back to the annexe it once was. There’s a decent-sized garden and courtyard parking for four cars.

What £400k buy: £400k home in Lofthouse, West Yorkshire
This four-bedroom house in Lofthouse, West Yorkshire, reveals its 400-year-old history in the coat of arms in the hallway, the elaborate oak panelled walls, moulded frieze work, and inglenook fireplaces. Mullioned windows overlook landscaped gardens and an attached outbuilding has been turned into a garage – and could be reinvented as an annexe. A bit of jiggling will improve the first floor, where one bedroom is accessed by another and the only bathroom is a trek through the master bedroom. Progress has encroached upon this timewarp in the form of the M62 running nearby, and the A61 off which the house is set.

What £400k buy: £400k home in Plumstead, London
This end-of-terrace overlooking Plumstead Common in south-east London has been extended to create 1,600 sq ft of space, including a large and chic kitchen/dining room, two en suites and a fourth attic bedroom. Victorian fireplaces survive in many of the rooms. The price you pay for the expansion is a small decked courtyard garden, but the common starts just outside the front door.

What £400k buy: £400k home in Sherborn, Cotswolds
This is aristocratic living on a budget in the Cotswold village of Sherborn. Residents of this converted mansion share 12 acres of garden, an orangery, croquet lawn, tennis courts, indoor pool, gym and sauna. Beyond the boundary are acres of National Trust land. Exactly £400,000 buys a three-bedroomed portion of the first floor with a regally sized and presented drawing room and two bathrooms.
