This 200-year-old cottage on the outskirts of St Agnes, Cornwall, is a stroll away from the south-west coastal path and the dramatic ruined mines of ‘Poldark’ country. Recent refurbishments have exposed the stone walls in the two receptions, both of which have handsome fireplaces, and added an en suite to the ground floor bedroom. They have not yet reached the balding lawned garden, however.

Beware: it’s 15 miles to the nearest urban facilities, including secondary school, at Portree.
