What will £200,000 buy you in the UK property market?

whatWill: Auchterarder
This semi on a stately scale in Blackford near Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross. The dining room opens on to a conservatory; a huge window and original fireplace glamorise the large living room; and the three bedrooms are decently sized. There are outbuildings and a dog-run in the back garden. The village straddles the A9 which hastens you to Perth.

whatWill: Bridgend
This five-bedroom house in Pontycymer, near Bridgend. Your budget goes a long way in this former mining village. The local vicar once lived palatially in this four-reception room house with views over woods and hills, and most of its Victorian graces – ornate fireplaces, tiled floors and elegant coving – survive, although the place could do with a modernising hand.

whatWill: Honeybourne
This two-bedroom cottage in the Worcestershire village of Honeybourne. Close to the best glories of the Cotswolds, it’s a dainty berth with two bedrooms, an upstairs bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bath, and a kitchen large enough for family dining. Since £200,000 counts as petty cash in this part of the land you’ll have to put up with the front door opening into the sitting room and the stairs leading our of the kitchen. Mainline train services depart nearby for London.

whatWill: Plymouth
This four bedroom house near the centre of Plymouth. There’s only a stingy courtyard for a garden and the décor could do with some light refreshment, but it’s a roomy home for the money, currently used as a student let, with three receptions and two bath/shower rooms.

whatWill: Walpole
This piece of thatch among equally good-looking neighbours in Suffolk. Once the 70s carpets and blinding paintwork have been erased, this could be a storybook home and, if you converted the brick outbuildings into an office, you need never leave it. Set in the village of Walpole, there are two receptions, an elongated kitchen and two bedrooms, each reached by a different staircase. Close by is the millionaires’ seaside playground of Southwold.
