What Wilfried Zaha has said about his failed £80m Arsenal summer transfer

Wilfried Zaha has admitted that he was unhappy about how events in the summer transfer window transpired.

The winger was a target for both Arsenal and Everton before the season started, while there were also links to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain up until the European deadline at the beginning of the month.

But Crystal Palace managed to hold on to their star player.

Having tied down Zaha to a new contract just last summer, the Eagles were always in a strong negotiating position and under no pressure to sell.

Their reported price-tag for the Ivory Coast international was £80m, with the suggestion that they were even looking to increase their asking price to near the £100m mark.

But with Arsenal seeing a £40m bid rejected, Zaha reportedly informed Palace of his intentions to leave upon returning from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Everton also entered the race, although the transfer window for Premier League clubs closed with Zaha still at Selhurst Park and he's broken his silence over what happened in the summer.

"What happened in the summer happened… there were things I was told that did not happen and I was not happy about it," he told  Crystal Palace fans website HLTCO . "But I'm still a Palace player and want to do well for the club.

"The fans care about your wellbeing and I will always love Palace - whatever happens."

"Whatever happens" could be taken as somewhat of hint regarding Zaha's future.

The window reopens in January, but whether Arsenal or Everton would be interested remains to be seen.

The Gunners signed Zaha's international teammate Nicolas Pepe for a club record fee of £72m whilst also selling Alex Iwobi to the Toffees for an initial £28m.

Meanwhile, there's been talk of a move to Chelsea for Zaha in the new year , but only if the Blues' are successful in getting their transfer ban lifted.
