What we've learned about Australia's biggest manhunt

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST DEZI FREEMAN:

* Police attended Dezi Freeman's property at Porepunkah in Victoria's High Country on August 26, 2025, after he was deemed a person of interest

* He was accused of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 16 and attempting to involve a child in the production of child abuse material

* Officers intended to locate and seize electronic devices for the potential presence of child abuse material

NEGOTIATIONS WITH FREEMAN:

* Ten officers arrived at the property and split up, with five police entering the property on foot and approaching the bus

* Police attempted to negotiate with Freeman, who repeatedly refused to emerge

* When Freeman was informed of the allegations against him, he replied: "Oh, for f***'s sake, what bulls***"

THE SHOOTOUT AND POLICE MURDERS:

* Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson killed after stepping through window of the bus

* Suffered a gunshot wound to the face and neck after entering the bus and died at the scene

* Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart tried to run and was killed when Freeman discharged the gun a second time

* Freeman can be heard repeatedly saying: "I had no choice, I had no choice"

* Freeman's wife Amalia emerged from the bus with a young child about a minute after the first gunshot and walked downhill toward a river

* Freeman removed Sen Const de Waart-Hottart's firearm from the holster and spare magazine from his belt

* Freeman approached the dying officer and swore repeatedly at him before reentering the bus

* A police member called out to Det Sen Const Thompson, to which Freeman replied: "F***ing scum, die in hell, you f***ing die in f***ing hell"

* He then discharged the police-issued firearm he had taken and shot Det Sen Const Thompson a second time

* Freeman fled the scene and texted Amalia saying: "Get miles away and keep going. See you in heaven, love"

FREEMAN'S GUN HISTORY:

* He had no active firearms licence and no registered firearms at the time of the shootings

* It is not yet known where Freeman sourced the shotgun from and it has not been recovered

* Freeman was approved to hold a category A and B long arm licence in 2015 and a general handgun licence in 2016

* His handgun licence expired in March 2022 and his long-arm licence in March 2025, both while suspended

FREEMAN DISCOVERY/SHOOTOUT:

* Police discovered Freeman's hideout in Thologolong in the week leading up to March 30

* Freeman consistently thwarted attempts by police to negotiate with him, calling police "thugs" and "bullies" and saying they were "just there to hurt him"

* Freeman insisted the Porepunkah murders were self-defence

* He is believed to have fired at police with the handgun he took at Porepunkah

* The trajectory of the projectile fired by Freeman is unknown

* Police were not equipped with body-worn cameras or similar recording devices

* A police Air Wing helicopter captured the final shootout

* Freeman activated the voice memos function on his mobile phone, capturing audio

NEXT STEPS:

* The coronial brief related to the officers' deaths is set to be delivered by August 21

* The inquest could be scheduled for March 2027

* The coronial brief into Freeman's death is due by October 30, with the matter adjourned
