What West Ham’s Conor Coventry did vs Reading as former Hammer downs Rotherham United loanee

West Ham United midfielder Conor Coventry was in action for loan club Rotherham United on Tuesday night in the Championship.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined the Millers in the closing days of the January transfer window and faced a trip to the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Tuesday to take on Reading.

Coventry, in only his third appearance for the Millers, again played the duration of the second-tier match and played a big role in Rotherham going 1-0 up before half-time, with his wide free-kick being headed in by Lee Peltier.

However, it would be an ex-Hammer in the form of Andy Carroll who would turn the game on its head, leading to Coventry suffering his first defeat for the Yorkshire side.

Early in the second half, Carroll’s header at the end of a Femi Azeez free-kick levelled the game, before Azeez and Carroll again linked up for the late winner.

Azeez’s last minute corner found the head of Carroll, who headed across the box for Tyreese Fornah to steer in a late winner.

Carroll was not the only ex-Hammer to feature in the game. Playing alongside Coventry in the Rotherham side was ex-Irons striker Jordan Hugill.

The result leaves Rotherham 20th in the Championship table and four points clear of the relegation zone. However, that could change on Wednesday night, with three of the four sides below the Millers, Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Blackpool, all in action.

A win for Reading moved them up to 13th, just six points shy of the play-off places.
