What went on in London this week: Johnny Depp makes his comeback at Curzon

Curzon cinemas played host to two cancelled actors in comeback mode on Tuesday. Johnny Depp was at Curzon Mayfair for the premiere of his film about the artist Modigliani, which stars French actor Antonia Desplat. She crept up to Depp on the red carpet to put her arms around him, while other cast members Stephen Graham and Al Pacino were conspicuously absent. The biopic is the first thing Depp has directed in 20 years, but does it signal a potential return to Hollywood? The reviews have been lukewarm to cold, while the star turnout on the red carpet was limited to Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and his wife Sally, and Pierce Brosnan’s model son Paris and his girlfriend Alex Lee-Aillón. Afterwards, there was an party at Dartmouth House, an opulent Georgian mansion round the corner.

On the same night at Curzon Soho, Shia LaBeouf was at the premiere of Salvable, in which he plays an Irish gang leader turned boxing referee. He will appear in court in September accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, FKA twigs.

Meanwhile, other actors were busy doing all sorts of adorable things. Billie Piper and Damian Lewis were at the Lightroom for an immersive experience about dinosaurs which Lewis narrates, while in Brixton, Tobias Menzies posed in front of his art at the Many Actors Make Art fundraiser. Clad in a pair of Birkenstocks and a funky patterned shirt, he looked a far cry from Prince Philip, whom he played in The Crown.

Over in Hyde Park, designer Stone and Mason took models Stella Jones, Chey Maya and Jess Clarke to Sabrina Carpenter’s show at BST. They all toted the brand’s new bags, made from recycled crisp packets. There was a somewhat bemused reaction among the previously hyper six year old girls in the audience when Carpenter announced that her special guest for the evening was Duran Duran.

Pop girlies bringing out ageing rockers to their bemused fans is becoming something of a trend. Olivia Rodrigo brought out David Byrne of Talking Heads at the Governor’s Ball in New York and The Cure’s Robert Smith at Glastonbury. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa left the crowd of her Manchester show perplexed when she announced the special guest was Dave McCabe of the Zutons (for context, she had Charli xcx in London).
