What we're up to today

Ellen MacArthur's triumphant return to Falmouth after breaking the world record for circumnavigating the globe prompted a discussion over whether the Guardian's coverage of her exploits has been too harsh, or whether indeed we would care as much if MacArthur had been a tall, middle-aged man rather than a 28-year-old woman. As Stephen Moss wrote in his feature in the Guardian this morning, "She divides the nation in a way that [Sir Francis] Chichester ... never did".

Whatever our divergent views on MacArthur, we all agreed that her achievement deserves coverage, so we'll have a new story for her arrival in Falmouth and the news that she is to be made a Dame, plus extracts from her website and a gallery of images from her voyage.

While Guardian Unlimited Politics' Matthew Tempest has followed Tony Blair's grilling by the Commons liaison committee, in which Blair admitted to being a technophobe and never having visited the multimillion pound central government website or knowing its URL. ("I've had other things on my plate", he says.) The question, perhaps not surprisingly, came from that rare breed of UK politician, the blogging MP Richard Allan.

Donald MacLeod of EducationGuardian.co.uk didn't get around to writing yesterday about an academic conference about procrastination being held in Edinburgh this week, but he'll bring you the details today. The education site is also covering the news that the creator of Dolly the Sheep has been granted a licence to clone human embryos for medical research, and we'll be updating our explainer to help you understand the scientific background to the story.

Here on Newsblog, Tom Happold will be writing about the meaning of the term "Iraqiisation" - a term used on several occasions this morning by Tony Blair, and Mark Oliver is collecting his thoughts about the new Spongebob Squarepants movie.
