The major lessons from Leeds United's pre-season start under Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United returned to Thorp Arch and began pre-season training on Thursday as they make their first preparations for life in the Premier League.

LUTV produced a video of what went on at the training ground during the first day and we have unpacked everything we learned from it below.

Adidas gear is in

The new dawn has been marked by the arrival of global sportswear giant Adidas. The first thing which strikes you about the footage is how classy the new clobber is.

Gone are the silver t-shirts of Kappa and in is the sleek, black gear with the famous three stripes in gold down each arm.

Clipper, as announced earlier this week, is the title sponsor on the front of all the training wear, while SBOTOP, who are on the front of the main kit, are on the sleeves.

New faces

We are used to seeing the under-23s mix in with the first team, but there were a couple of new faces in the main group at the heart of the video.

Charlie Cresswell, a regular at the heart of the reserves’ defence last season, was front and centre with the main group on the first day back.

Less surprisingly after he made his debut last season, Oliver Casey was also in the group. Their inclusion may be a nod to the current Ben White-shaped hole in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The other new face was Joe Gelhardt’s, the 18-year-old striker who arrived from Wigan Athletic at the start of the week.

No Bielsa

The Argentine’s continuation at Elland Road is rapidly becoming the worst-kept secret in West Yorkshire given how freely the players have spoken about their futures under him.

However, there was no sign of the head coach in the footage at Thorp Arch. At this early stage, Benoit Delaval tends to lead the fitness-focused training before Bielsa and his coaches get involved on the field.

Bielsa was later photographed walking elsewhere in the new Adidas training kit, a major hint at where his future lies.

Lots and lots of running

The aforementioned main group were recorded carrying out what is known as the Yo-Yo test.

It’s very similar to the bleep test you may have done in school, but rather than shuttling back and forth continuously, increasing the speed, you have a 10-second rest between each shuttle in the Yo-Yo test as the speed goes up.

They were also filmed running around the track as a group led by Delaval.

The goalkeeping situation

In light of how the season ended for Kiko Casilla, there was one school of thought which believed he may well exit United and see out his career in Spain.

However, the Spaniard has reported back for training and remains established in the main group at Thorp Arch alongside Illan Meslier and Elia Caprile.

Kamil Miazek, whose future remains unclear, was not recorded in the footage.

Confirmed attendees

The main group consisted of Stuart Dallas, Helder Costa, Ezgjan Alioski, Gelhardt, Luke Ayling, Cresswell, Leif Davis, Casey, Patrick Bamford, Robbie Gotts, Liam Cooper, Barry Douglas and Mateusz Bogusz.

Jamie Shackleton, Kalvin Phillips, Pascal Struijk, Ian Poveda, Jordan Stevens, Pablo Hernandez and Tyler Roberts were all at Thorp Arch on Thursday too, but not with the main unit.

Absentees

Neither Adam Forshaw, Jack Harrison nor Mateusz Klich were accounted for in the club’s media or on their social media channels throughout Thursday.

Forshaw, as we know, has not played football since last September and had surgery on his hip in February. It is understandable why he may not be training with everyone else yet.

Harrison and Klich were each pictured at Thorp Arch for the first time on Friday.
