What we learned from Giants’ 37-18 loss to Cowboys

The New York Giants fell to the Dallas Cowboys, 37-18, on Monday night at MetLife stadium. Big Blue got off to a great start, creating some turnovers and putting points on the board. But then a black cat entered the field and it seemed to curse the Giants.

Here’s what we learned from that loss:

Giants are a production factory for opposing teams

The Giants have the 28th ranked defense in the NFL. 28th. They allow almost 400 yards per game. They have a -10 turnover ratio. They have just eight interceptions and five forced fumbles, all while also losing the time of possession battle.

Essentially, opposing teams can do whatever they want against the Giants. James Bettcher needs to make some serious adjustments on the defensive side of the ball if we are to see any improvements. Personnel may not be the problem, there’s plenty of talent to work with, but the plays need to be simpler. And he needs to ensure that his players know the whatever plays he’s calling.

Until then, players are going to continue putting up massive numbers and making a ton of cash off Big Blue.

Pat Shurmur needs to relinquish play-calling

It’s obvious that Pat Shurmur is in way over his head. His play-calling is atrocious at best and it shows with the Giants’ record. It also shows with the turnovers. The players either don’t know the plays well enough to execute them, or the plays he’s calling are so bad that the other team has no problem defending them. Regardless of the cause, it’s time for him to turn play-calling over to someone else. Mike Shula would be a good place to start.

And don’t even get us started on challenges…

It’s time for Mara to come out of hiding

The Giants are quite literally falling apart. So where is John Mara and why hasn’t he addressed this season’s problems? It’s time for him to come out and address the issues. Not just as a talking head in the media, but as an actual owner of a team. He needs to address his team and his coaching staff and give them the hard truths. Mara is known for being hands-off, but it’s time to get his hands dirty and fix the problems at hand. Even if it means firing someone.
