AUSTIN, Texas — Fourteen people were wounded early Saturday in a mass shooting in downtown Austin. One of the 14 victims died from their injuries.
A suspect arrested in connection with the mass shooting on Austin's 6th Street that wounded 14 is a juvenile, and authorities Sunday were still considering what charges he will face, officials told the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV.
Police have not released detailed information of the juvenile in custody or the suspect at large.
Here's what we know about the mass shooting in downtown Austin Saturday morning:
One shooting suspect arrested is a juvenile, one remains at large
Police and prosecutors have up to 48 hours from the time of a person's arrest to file charges against him. The suspect's age was not immediately released, and because he is not an adult, his identity and court records in the case likely will remain confidential.
What we know about second shooting suspect
Officials also were continuing efforts Sunday to locate a second suspect, and it was not immediately clear if that person also is a juvenile.
Condition of Austin shooting victims
Austin Interim Police Chief Joe Chacon stated in a 1 p.m. Saturday press conference that 14 people were injured in Saturday mass shooting.
One of the victims of Saturday's shooting, Douglas John Kantor, 25, of New York, has died, Austin police confirmed Sunday to the American-Statesman.
Officials said they believe most of the victims, whose injuries ranged from moderate to critical, were innocent bystanders.
Police said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident but that the investigation is ongoing.
Partiers and tourists returned to 6th Street
Austin residents and tourists alike returned in droves on Saturday night to the city’s iconic 6th Street entertainment district less than 24 hours after a shooting took place there.
Police: Tens of thousands potentially gathered at time of shooting
Police told the American-Statesman that the crowd in the city's entertainment district at the time was near the size of a "pre-pandemic" group, meaning potentially tens of thousands of people gathered in the area anchored by 6th Street.
6th Street is the core of the historic entertainment district in downtown Austin.
