On Thursday evening, at around 7pm, Northumbria Police received a report that adult human remains were found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker.
Officers went to the scene and a large area was taped off as they launched their investigations.
What have the police said?
Officers have confirmed they are in the process of identifying the individual, who was found near a stables off Waverdale Avenue.
The force said they were treating the death as unexplained at this stage.
It is believed the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At about 7pm on Thursday, we received a report that adult human remains had been found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker.
"We are currently in the process of identifying the individual and at this stage are treating their death as unexplained."

Officers have remained in the area since Thursday.
And on Sunday afternoon, a specialist search team was seen at the site where the human remains were found.
