Where is it?

Dyfed-Powys Police said the fire is at Ammanford Metal Recycling on Shands Road in the town.

The road itself was closed for several hours and people in the area are still being told by police to keep their windows and doors closed.

Traffic was being diverted around the scene.

When was it reported?

Residents reported hearing "a number of explosions" at about 3pm.

Tina Williams, who lives in nearby Norman Road, said: "It happened about 3pm. I was sat in the garden with my daughter and we heard this almighty bang.

"I ran out and could see the flames and smoke above the trees. I called the fire service straight away.

"They’ve closed off the whole area. The thing is there’s a gas plant nearby as well, on the same road.

"It was terrible. We've heard that everybody managed to get out without injuries, but there’s been a number of explosions since."

Smoke was quickly seen rising above the trees in the area with witnesses saying it was reaching heights of 300ft.

Chris Thomas, owner of B&R Factors, opposite the yard, said: “We were working as normal and then, between 3 and 3.30 there was this bang. You could feel it as much as hear it.

"We went outside and it didn’t look too bad to start with, then it got worse and worse. About an hour after the initial bang you could see this huge fireball. There’s been lots of little explosions since the initial one, but it seems to have died down now.”

Are homes being evacuated?

Many people living in the town said they could smell rubber and chemicals as well as expressing concerns that they will need to leave their homes for safety.

Claire Hardwicke, who lives in Ammanford, said: "The plume of smoke is massive. It smells of rubber and chemicals. There’s quite a crowd gathering as they clear the college and the police have closed Station Road.

“This is very bad. I’m worried they might evacuate homes.

“There must be at least 100 people just watching. They are busy setting up diverts and road blocks."

The local council said that nobody has yet been evacuated but plans are in place if it is needed.

A Camarthenshire Council spokeswoman said the authority had been on standby in case any homes needed to be evacuated, but none had been so far.

How many fire engines are there?

At its peak fire crews from Amman Valley, Llandeilo, Tumble, Ammanford, Pontadulais and Pondardawe were all in attendance battling the fire.

Resident Claire Hardwicke was full of praise for the crews, saying: "The emergency services deserve a big thanks for the speed at which they dealt with this situation. They put themselves at risk to keep all of us safe."
