'Severe damage' to cooling towers after fire raged at former Imperial Tobacco site in Nottingham

Firefighters confirmed they were tackling a large industrial fire at the former Imperial Tobacco factory site in Nottingham.

Three fire crews were called to the scene in Thane Road, Lenton at 1.40pm on Sunday May 24.

Thick black plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the sky just behind the Aston Martin car showroom.

Demand Management Inspector Andy Wright of Nottinghamshire Police said: "We were called to reports of  a fire at the Lenton Lane Industrial Estate at around 13.45pm today (Sunday 24 May 2020).

"We are assisting the fire service and have put in place road closures at Thane Road and Bull Close Road. People are advised to avoid the area at this time."

"There are no reported casualties."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that three water cooling towers at the site had been "severely damaged" by the fire and they had three pumps at the scene.

Firefighters were working with site managers to tackle the blaze.

Thane Road had been home to Imperial Tobacco since the 1960s and provided employment to thousands of people in Nottingham.

But production moved overseas in 2016 and Henry Boot Developments (HBD) bought the site in 2017.

There are plans for it to be replaced by industrial buildings and warehouses.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "While we deal with the incident at Dunkirk we would advise residents in the Clifton Boulevard area of Nottingham to stay indoors & keep their doors & windows closed."

Then at 3pm the fire service added: "All crews have now left the fire on Thane Rd, Dunkirk after liaising with on site staff. The incident involved 3 cooling towers approx 50m x 20m severely damaged by fire with FFs using 2MJ 1HRJ to fight the fire."
