What we know about the fatal ramming attack in Vancouver

  • At least 11 people were killed, ranging in age from 5 to 65, and at least 20 others were injured when a car ploughed into a crowd at the annual Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver, Canada.
  • 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder, with more charges expected. Police say he had prior interactions with law enforcement and mental health professionals, but the incident is not considered terrorism.
  • The incident occurred on East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8pm local time on Saturday during the Filipino cultural festival. The suspect was initially detained by bystanders before police arrived.
  • Witnesses described a horrific scene with the driver accelerating into the crowd after slowly passing a barricade. A vigil was held for the victims, drawing hundreds of mourners.
  • Canadian officials, including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, expressed condolences and are monitoring the situation.
