A gunman killed 10 people and wounded 10 others at a ballroom dance club in California following a Lunar New Year celebration, A manhunt for the suspect in the latest mass shooting to hit the US.

It happened at around 10.20pm local time in Monterey Park, Los Angeles, which is 6.20am UK time, and details are now starting to emerge after yet another incident in America.

Here is what we know so far:

10 people have died

LA police has confirmed that nine people were killed in the mass shooting. At the time thousands of people were celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Captain Andrew Meyer, of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, said the wounded had been taken to hospitals and that their conditions ranged from stable to critical. He said the 10 people had died at the scene.

Where it happened

Police were called to Monterey Park, a city about 10 miles east of Los Angeles, with a large Asian population.

The shooting happened at a ballroom, about an hour after a Lunar New Year Festival had finished.

Capt Meyer said people had been "pouring out of the location screaming" when officers arrived on the scene at around 10.30pm local time on Saturday - 6.30am on Sunday in the UK.

He said officers had gone into the ballroom as firefighters treated the wounded.

Seung Won Choi, who owns a seafood restaurant in the area, told the Los Angeles Times that three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door.

He said he was told there was a gunman with a machine gun who had multiple rounds of ammunition on him. Mr Choi said he believes the shooting took place at a dance club.

Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia

: "Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighbouring city, Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred.

"Monterey Park is home to one of the largest Asian communities in Los Angeles County and many were out celebrating the Lunar New Year."

Has anyone been arrested?

The gunman was male, he has not been arrested and a manhunt is underway.

Dozens of police officers, including helicopters, responded to the shooting and remain at the scene.

Footage posted on social media showed deserted, cordoned-off streets guarded by police cars.

Capt Meyer gave no description of the male suspect or the weapon he used, or why police had given no information on the shooting for hours while the gunman remained on the run. He also said police were investigating another incident in the nearby city of Alhambra to see whether it was connected.

The police officer said it was too early in the investigation to know if the gunman knew anyone at the ballroom or if it was a hate crime or not. He gave no further details.

How many mass shootings have there been this month?

The incident marks the fifth mass shooting in the US this month and the deadliest since 21 people were killed in a school in Uvalde, Texas, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the US.

The latest violence comes two months after five people were killed at a Colorado Springs nightclub.
