What we know about Barack Obama's visit to Scotland for COP26 so far

Barack Obama will be the latest big name to head to Glasgow for the COP26 climate change summit.

Earlier today, we reported that the former US President will touch down in Scotland’s largest city for the vital conference next week.

His visit comes after current US leader, and ex-Vice President to Obama, Joe Biden spent two days in Glasgow this week.

More than 30,000 delegates and world leaders are expected to visit the city during the 12 day climate summit, which concludes on November 12.

Here is what we know about Obama’s visit to Scotland so far.

The 60-year-old is set to land in Scotland on Monday and is expected to visit the climate summit on the same day.

So far, the length of his stay here remains unclear.

It will be the first time the former President has visited Scotland since 2017.

Obama will hold a roundtable discussion with a small group of ‘young leaders’ attending the COP26 summit.

He is expected to discuss the impact that young people have on the climate change debate and how they can continue to make their voices heard.

Obama is also expected to reflect on the Paris Agreement, which he signed America’s name to in 2016.

The Paris Agreement is considered to be the most vital document in the climate change fight, with the majority of global nations pledging to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

On the Obama Foundation website, it reads: “The Paris Agreement remains one of the accomplishments President Obama is most proud of - but the agreement capstoned a longer effort that stretched across his two terms, and was intended to be a starting point for efforts to continually increase its ambitions to come.”

The plans for the rest of his stay in Scotland remains unclear.

During his last visit in 2017, he delivered a speech in the Edinburgh in front of business leaders and politicians before playing a round of golf in St Andrews.

He promised to come back to enjoy the “full Scottish experience”.

Obama said then: "I promise you I will be back because, unless it is raining and blustery, I will not feel I have got the full Scottish experience.”
