What we know about Baker Mayfield’s upcoming surgery

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is dealing with a shoulder fracture and a torn labrum in his left shoulder (non-throwing), and will undergo surgery during the 2022 offseason. It’s likely he will be able to be back in action in time for next season.

Mayfield will get the surgery to repair his labrum in L.A. with Dr. Orr Limpisvasti at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute, according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. Mayfield got his surgery on the books for Jan. 19, per Cleveland.com.

Even after suffering the injury in Week 2, he finished the season with 3,010 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 14 games. He and the Browns missed the playoffs and appear likely to finish in last in the AFC North.

Mayfield’s offseason progress will be worth monitoring as he recovers from the surgery. With the quarterback’s future in question in Cleveland, his injury — along with a rough season — may play a role in how the Browns choose to proceed with him, whether they remain him or move on.
