What we know about Argentina snowstorm as hundreds of tourists rescued

  • More than 200 tourists were rescued after being trapped by a powerful snowstorm at Balcon del Pissis, a 4,500-metre-high volcano viewpoint in Argentina .
  • Over 30 vehicles were buried in snow , with tourists seeking refuge inside them as the weather conditions became increasingly challenging.
  • Emergency responders, utilising specialised snow vehicles, heavy machinery, and drones, took almost 24 hours to clear the snow and extract all trapped individuals.
  • The rescue operation was temporarily suspended overnight due to freezing temperatures, forcing some people to spend the night in their vehicles.
  • All individuals were successfully rescued by Wednesday afternoon, though two people required hospitalisation for hypothermia, in what the local mayor described as one of the region's most significant rescue efforts.
