What was the loud gunfire in Cardiff at 11.30am today?

If you heard gunfire in Cardiff this morning, it was related to the Queen's visit to the city today.

She was visiting Wales today as part of her first visit to Wales for five years. You can follow live updates from the visit here.

The 21-gun salute was fired just moments before the Queen attended the Welsh Parliament building in Cardiff Bay to officially open the Sixth Senedd.

The sound made the crowd that had gathered jumped and smoke filled Cardiff Bay.

The event usually takes place shortly after an election, held in May 2021, but has been delayed due to coronavirus.

The event included creative performances by participants from all over Wales, but, due to the ongoing restrictions, for the first time it will involve a mixture of in person and pre-recorded performances.

During the official opening of the Senedd, the Queen made a speech in the Senedd’s chamber, as did the Llywydd of the Senedd, Elin Jones MS, and First Minister, Mark Drakeford.
