What was going on at Dovestone Reservoir as huge search launched by police and mountain rescue

Police have safely rescued a missing person following a huge search operation at Dovestone Reservoir.

Officers attended the Oldham beauty spot on Monday (August 10) morning, after receiving reports of a vulnerable missing person in the area.

Teams from Oldham Mountain Rescue and a National Police Air Service helicopter joined the search near Wimberry Rocks - also known as Indian's head.

Police and Mountain Rescue were able to locate the male and accompany him down safely. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Witnesses described seeing a 'huge' emergency service response at the Reservoir car park, which prompted speculation about the nature of the incident.

One eyewitness said: "We arrived at the car park at around 9am on Monday morning and there was a police car there.

"About 45 minutes into our walk, we noticed a low flying helicopter and we thought maybe it was a training exercise or someone was in trouble.

"When we returned to the car park there were a lot of people up one of the hills, and there were three police cars and mountain rescue there."

A spokesperson for Oldham Mountain Rescue said: "The Team received a request from  Greater Manchester Police  on Monday morning asking for assistance with a search in the Dove Stones area for a missing person.

"As we were arriving at the RV, the NPAS helicopter, which had also been tasked, spotted a person who fitted the description of the MisPer at Wimberry Rocks (Indian's Head).

"GMP officers and OMRT personnel were quickly dispatched up the hill and soon made contact with the male.

"After a short chat, he was accompanied back down to be taken for onward care."

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
