What Warren Gatland said to Andy Powell in personal phone call hours after buggygate

Warren Gatland's time with Wales is at an end - with fourth place at the Rugby World Cup capping an era with significantly more highs than lows.

One of the most bizarre plots of the Gatland reign however came back in 2010, when No. 8 Andy Powell drunkenly drove a golf buggy down the M4 from the team's Vale of Glamorgan base in the aftermath of a dramatic 31-24 win over Scotland.

And the 38-year-old has now revealed what Gatland said to him in the aftermath of being caught by police.

"I was at home on the Sunday afternoon and he rings me up," he told WalesOnline for a special Warren Gatland episode of the Welsh Rugby Podcast.

"He started giggling and went: ‘What the f**k were you doing?’

"I said: ‘I’ll be honest, Gats, I was that p****d, I don’t know’.

"He burst out laughing but said: ‘I’m going to have to give you a ban’. He gave me a ban and said the best thing I could do was go on holiday — take a week away.

"He goes: ‘Have you got any ideas where you are going?’

"I told him I’d be going to Amsterdam. He said: ‘F*****g hell, that’s the worst trip you could go on’.

"He started laughing again."

Powell looks back on the phone call fondly, adding that it was that man management and people skills that made Gatland the coach he was in Wales.

"It went to show he had a bit of character about him.

"He could have come down hard on me. He sort of gave me a bollocking but he had a laugh at the same time. But he’s a great guy."
