What Unai Emery has said about David Luiz as Chelsea defender attempts to 'force' Arsenal move

Arsenal have once again been linked with a shock move for David Luiz.

The Gunners were said to be eyeing the Chelsea defender last summer in a £20m deal and now reports in France suggest the north London outfit have rekindled that interested following the departure of Laurent Koscielny.

In fact, according to L’Equipe , the north London outfit have submitted an offer for Luiz.

The Brazilian is reportedly determined to make the move to the Emirates Stadium, and has pulled out of training with the Blues to try and force through a move before Thursday's deadline.

Should a shock switch across the capital materialise for Luiz, it would see him link up once again with Unai Emery.

Arsenal’s head coach briefly worked with the 32-year-old at Paris Saint-Germain before the defender sealed his move back to Chelsea in August 2016.

They were only together for a couple of months in the French capital, but at the time of the transfer, Emery admitted he did not want to sell Luiz.

"I wanted [David Luiz], like all of the other big-name players, to stay," said Emery.

"He called me after the Monaco match and then spoke with the club to request their permission. He told me 'coach, I have a good offer and I think that it is best if I leave.'

"I gave him my opinion. I talked a lot with him. I told him I did not want him to leave and that was important. But if he's not happy and he thinks it is better for him to leave, I respect that.

"The club also asked me for my thoughts and we agreed that if the player wanted to leave and the club could agree a fee with Chelsea, then it would be difficult to keep him."

At the time of last summer's transfer links, Luiz had found himself out of favour at Chelsea after falling out with ex-Blues boss Antonio Conte.

But he was a regular under Maurizio Sarri last season and even signed a new contract a few months ago.

Arsenal: 2019/20 season preview

"I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay," he told Chelseafc.com in May.

"I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.

"It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to try to do my best to help the team."
