What UEFA's Champions League decision means for Chelsea's Timo Werner transfer

UEFA have announced when Chelsea will finally take on Bayern Munich in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.

The Blues will be going into the game with a 3-0 deficit after getting a second-half hammering from the Germans at Stamford Bridge.

And the next match will take place on either August 7 or 8 with the coronavirus pandemic having played havoc with the football schedule.

The governing body announced that the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played in a mini-tournament style between August 12-23 in Lisbon.

Chelsea fans shouldn't worry about Timo Werner transfer

However, there is one decision from UEFA which will also have another impact on the Blues, and that is regarding transfers.

Chelsea have already sealed the signing of Hakim Ziyech and are on the verge of adding Timo Werner to the squad for the new season.

There had been reports that the Blues would be able to play the two new signings if they were brought in in time for the competitions final few weeks.

However, UEFA have decided that squads will have to be the same from those who played earlier in the season and new signings will not be allowed to play for those clubs.

It means Frank Lampard is not going to be able to rely on any new signings for next season, but will have to use those squad members who got them out of the group stages.

However, that could be without the likes of Willian and Pedro, whose contracts are still scheduled to run out at the end of June.

Werner's RB Leipzig have already reached the quarter-finals stage of the Champions League, dispatching Tottenham Hotspur with ease in the last 16.

However, Werner has indicated that he won't play in the next rounds of the competition, instead preferring to head to Chelsea and prepare in time for the 2020/21 campaign.
