This allowed Frank Lampard's men to jump back above Manchester United and into fourth spot once more.
United's win over Bournemouth had put the pressure on but the Blues responded well at Stamford Bridge as Olivier Giroud, Willian and Ross Barkley all netted.
Lampard's side are now two points clear of fifth-placed United with five matches left.
