What Todd Boehly did after Graham Potter gets Leeds reprieve as Chelsea owner shows commitment

Todd Boehly tried to bring good luck to Chelsea for a second time over the weekend, going to Selhurst Park to watch the women's side in their Continental Cup final against Arsenal. Having watched the men's side win at home to Leeds United on Saturday, the American co-owner stayed in London to cast his eyes over Emma Hayes' side, but it didn't quite go to plan.

He hasn't been much of a good luck charm for the Blues men's team recently, seeing Potter's team lose to Tottenham last Sunday and also attending several games on the run of form as bad as anything in the past 30 years of the club. With pressure mounting on Potter to get results, Boehly's presence watching Hayes' team play is a continuation of his dream, but it wasn't to be as Chelsea fell to a 3-1 defeat at a sold-out Selhurst Park.

In the initial takeover statement it was said: "In addition, the proposed new owners will commit £1.75bn in further investment for the benefit of the Club. This includes investments in Stamford Bridge, the Academy, the Women’s Team and Kingsmeadow and continued funding for the Chelsea Foundation."

It is the women's team that have been the more successful on the pitch for much of the past decade, winning the Women's Super League (WSL) five times in seven seasons, as well as an extra six domestic cups and a Champions League final. Their aim to add the 2023 Conti Cup to that collection couldn't have gotten off to a better start either.

Sam Kerr opened the scoring inside two minutes before the Gunners charged back to get into a 3-1 lead before the break, leaving Boehly watching on in the south London crowd.

The patience and reward shown in Hayes across her spell at the club is similar to the current backing of Potter at the start of his career at SW6. Boehly himself has already spoken of the ambition for the club across all its sides. “There is a simple mantra that guides us every day: we want to win, together, and make you proud," he said in August.

"As one of the world’s elite football clubs, Chelsea sits at the pinnacle of the game. We want to build on this remarkable history of success by acquiring quality talent across our senior, youth and women’s teams, exploring ways to improve the game-day experience – such as the Bridge and Kingsmeadow – and continuing our service to the community, including the vital work of the Chelsea Foundation.

“Today’s game is an opportunity to welcome our new signings to the Bridge for the time as Chelsea players. There is so much for us to accomplish together. The same excitement goes for our women’s team and academy set-up, both of which are among the very best in the world.

"We’re so proud of their successes, and we eagerly await next month, when Emma Hayes brings the Chelsea Women squad here to the Bridge to begin their WSL title defence."

After Chelsea's dominating FA Cup performance against Arsenal last week, they were the expected winners but went home with the losers' medal. They go again at home on Wednesday to Brighton in the WSL.

Boehly will now be hoping that Potter can bring the results that Hayes has her mentality monsters delivering on a weekly basis.
