What to look out for in Bristol Rovers' final pre-season friendly against Plymouth Argyle

Bristol Rovers make the trip to Home Park today to face Plymouth Argyle in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the start of the new season.

Here is what to look out for in the game.

A full-strength Rovers team?

It is the final pre-season friendly, and many managers like to get as close to a full-strength side out onto the pitch in a game like this ahead of the start of the season. Graham Coughlan has not given much of an indication about whether he will do the same, but it will be worth keeping an eye on what sort of team the manager picks, and whether it can offer much of an insight on who might play against Blackpool next Saturday.

A lot of places still appear to be up for grabs in Rovers' side ahead of the new season, so a good performance in this final pre-season game could go a long way to helping a player secure a start at Bloomfield Road.

Does Jonson Clarke-Harris feature?

Rovers' star striker has missed every pre-season game so far through injury, although Coughlan said last weekend he was set to return to training imminently. Today will be Clarke-Harris' final chance to get some minutes under his belt ahead of the new season, so it is surely a case that he needs to play if he is fit enough.

If he does not feature against Plymouth, then it means he will go into the new season without having had a proper pre-season, and could well be playing catch up on the rest of the squad - if he is not involved, then it will raise doubts about how fit he is for Blackpool next week.

Room for Lucas Tomlinson?

The youngster impressed in midfield against Swansea City, and won praise from Coughlan, who likened him to Jack Payne, a midfielder that Coughlan coached at Southend before being sold for a compensation package that the Rovers boss described as being around £1m. So high praise, then.

So it will be interesting to see whether Tomlinson is involved against Plymouth Argyle. There is a lot of competition for a spot in midfield - it is arguably Rovers' strongest area of the pitch - but if Tomlinson plays, and performs well, it could well indicate that Coughlan sees him as a first-team player this season.

Is Kyle Bennett involved?

The winger spent the second half of last season on loan at Swindon Town, and manager Richie Wellens has indicated this week that he is going to launch a bid to sign Bennett permanently. Yet if there is one area that Rovers still need to strengthen this summer, it is on the wings, so selling the only natural left winger they have would be a brave move with only a week before the season starts.

If Bennett does not feature, it could well indicate that a move back to the County Ground is in the offing. If he does feature, then it will suggest that any transfer is a long way off.

Where does Liam Sercombe play?

Sercombe is naturally a centre midfielder, who excels at playing in an advanced position behind the strikers. However, last season he was stuck out onto the wing due to the fact Rovers did not have many wide players. He was a victim of circumstance and it meant his form suffered in a mediocre season for the 29-year-old.

As stated, Rovers still lack width this season. Sercombe has mainly played in his natural position so far this pre-season, though, so it is worth keeping an eye on where the midfielder plays against Plymouth, particularly if Bennett is not involved.
