What to know about the UK emergency alert test next week

  • A nationwide emergency alert drill will take place across the UK on Sunday, 7 September, at approximately 3pm.
  • Mobile phones connected to 4G and 5G networks will vibrate, emit a siren sound for up to 10 seconds, and display a test message.
  • This marks the second national test of the system, which has been used five times for real warnings, including during Storm Eowyn, Storm Darragh, and for an unexploded Second World War bomb in Plymouth.
  • The system is designed to deliver targeted, life-saving advice during emergencies, such as severe weather or flooding, to specific at-risk communities.
  • Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, emphasised the system's vital role in national safety, and users can opt out of alerts via their phone settings.
