What to know about the October supermoon

• October's full moon will be the largest and brightest of the year, marking the first supermoon since November 2024.
• Occurring on Tuesday 7 October at 4.48am BST, this celestial event will also carry the traditional name Harvest Moon.
• The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, and this year's appearance is the latest date for it since 1987.
• A supermoon is defined as a new or full moon within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth, appearing even larger due to the 'Moon Illusion' when near the horizon.
• The full moons in November and December will also be classed as supermoons, with the 5 November 'Beaver Moon' coinciding with Guy Fawkes Day in the UK.
