What to expect where you live as thundery showers target Wales this weekend

The beautiful summer weather that graced Wales this week is set to fade into the weekend.

Dashing hopes for barbecues, camping trips and other outdoor activities, low pressure will erase the blazing sunshine, sending thundery showers to many areas.

Sun seekers should plan to get outdoors on Friday, July 24 when a window of fine weather is in store, according to BBC Meteorologist Ben Rich.

"High pressure centred across the Azores is going to try to build in," he said.

"It will certainly ridge its way in temporarily across the British Isles so that gives us a gap between weather systems."

Temperatures will near 20C on Friday with plenty of sunshine (Met Office)

This means many locations will continue to be dry and sunny on Friday, despite the odd shower in parts of south Wales.

Temperatures will push to near 20C.

The weekend itself, however, will not be nearly as pleasant - and the outlook resembles nothing like we saw on the same day one year ago, Mr Rich said.

A record-breaking 38.7 degrees C was recorded in Cambridge on July 25, 2019 as heat gripped Britain.

But this week, as the jet stream remains broadly to the south of the British Isles "there's no way we're going to tap into any heat like that", he said.

Temperatures will be cooler than usual for this time of year in Wales, with the mercury dipping to around 17-19C.

An area of low pressure is expected to spin up, causing cloud and rain to break out during the afternoon. As the wet weather pushes eastward heavy thundery downpours will erupt, with wind gusts around 30mph.

The conditions may be unpleasant for families planning their first camping trips of the year, as easing lockdown restrictions in Wales allow campsites to reopen to the public on Saturday, July 25.

More of the same is in store on Sunday, July 26 with temperatures rising into the upper teens amid more heavy showers.
