What to expect from Trump’s Cabinet meeting amid shutdown and escalating war tensions

  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Trump would be hosting a Cabinet meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET. The Thursday morning meeting comes amid escalating tensions over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown and the war in Iran.
  • Trump was active on Truth Social early Thursday morning, calling multiple times for an end to the filibuster, warning Iranian leaders that they “better get serious soon, before it is too late” in negotiations and trashing NATO for its lack of help against Iran. Iran’s leaders have been defiant in pushing back on Trump’s demands via social media posts this week.
  • The president is expected to face questions over the 40-day shutdown, which has prompted hundreds of Transportation Security Administration workers to resign and thousands more to call out, creating massive lines and flight delays at major U.S. airports.
  • Bipartisan talks on Capitol Hill over DHS funding remain stalled, and it’s unclear when a breakthrough can be expected.
  • The war in Iran, which has now dragged on for more than three weeks, engulfing large swaths of the Middle East in violence, is also likely to be addressed. Multiple recent polls show most Americans are opposed to the deadly conflict.
