What to expect from the Lions’ rookies against the Vikings

The rookies of the Detroit Lions have been trending in the right direction so far this season. While most have not yet cracked the starting lineup, they have found ways to contribute on gamedays.

Here’s what to expect from the Lions’ rookies in today’s matchup:

Running back Ty Johnson

Johnson hasn’t seen the field much since the start of the season and only took two snaps on offense last week versus the Packers. It appears as though he’s lost his job as the team’s second running back to J.D. McKissic, so don’t expect too much from the speedy rookie in today’s game.

Tight end T.J. Hockenson

Hockenson has only contributed nine receptions for 56 yards since his record-setting debut in Week 1. The Vikings have struggled to contain tight ends this season, so there’s a chance for the first-round pick to make a comeback.

Defensive lineman Kevin Strong

The undrafted rookie will once again serve as Detroit’s backup defensive tackle with Da’Shawn Hand and Mike Daniels ruled out. Strong hasn’t done much in terms of stats, but he has been able to create some pressure from the defensive line.

Linebacker Jahlani Tavai

After a sharp decrease in snaps following the return of Jarrad Davis, Tavai has been able to work his way back into the defense. The rookie has 15 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble on the season so far. The Lions’ linebacker corps has a tough assignment in covering both Kyle Rudolph and Dalvin Cook. Expect Tavai’s usage to go up in this game.

Safeties Will Harris and C.J. Moore

Harris has seen an uptick of snaps over the last three games and will likely continue to get reps in multiple-safety sets.

Moore has been a core special teamer in Detroit, and his role isn’t expected to change any time soon.
