What to expect from Taoiseach Micheal Martin's live interview on CNN as Joe Biden set for Ireland visit

Taoiseach Micheal Martin is set to appear on CNN this Friday for a live interview.

Though the topics up for discussion have not been revealed, it is pretty safe to assume that the inauguration of Joe Biden, who has proudly professed his Irish roots on many occasions, will be a major talking point

Martin took to social media to commemorate the inauguration, calling Biden “a true friend of Ireland” and the inauguration “a true day of history and hope”.

“I look forward to forging ever closer ties between our two great nations,” Martin continued.

It remains to be seen whether Martin’s appearance on the US broadcaster will delve into the State visit to Ireland that is already in the works, according to sources speaking to The Irish Mirror.

Sources claim that the visit could be slated for as early as June of this year, roughly coinciding with when G7 talks in Cornwall are set to take place.

It would be quite a momentous diplomatic achievement for Ireland should the visit go ahead i this time frame, as it would mark one of the first State visits of the Biden administration and would further project the image that the bond between Ireland and the US is more high-priority than ever.

The Taoiseach’s yearly St Patrick’s Day visit to the US may not be on the cards this year as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

The visit has become quite a beloved tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and always includes a ceremonial gifting of a shamrock plant to the incumbent US President.

It was notably during last year’s Paddy’s Day State visit of then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced the first raft of pandemic restrictions for Ireland.

Micheal Martin recently said that the COVID-19 virus will “dictate” whether this year’s visit will go ahead.
