What to expect from Nicola Sturgeon's next big Covid announcement

Nicola Sturgeon will not be making anymore lockdown reviews until June 28, it has been confirmed.

The First Minister is expected to make the next major announcement on June 28- the original planned date for the whole of Scotland to move down to Level 0.

However, she has said that Scotland is in a "fragile" state as the Delta virus continues to thrive and spread across the country.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, delays in moving areas down a level have already occurred as Glasgow only just moved to Level two last week and many areas including Edinburgh and Stirling were refused to move down to Level One.

What is Sturgeon expected to say?

As the climate of the pandemic can rapidly change with outbreaks and variants, Scots will have a clearer idea as to what to expect closer to the end of the month.

Nicola Sturgeon will address the Scottish Parliament on June 21 and set out what her expectation is for any further easing going ahead or not depending on the data available, GlasgowLive reports.

As the vaccination programme provides hope, it is likely that changes to Level Two restrictions will be announced.

However that is dependant on cases and data. Edinburgh has already seen a number of outbreaks and is in the threshold for Level Three as cases continue to increase.

Since there has already been delays to areas moving down a level, it can be suggested that the move to Level Zero for the whole country will be postponed.

In her previous briefing, the First Minister has said that she is "optimistic" that if the country follows the rules, and get the vaccine when offered, it will "maximise the opportunity of a summer of fewer restrictions, and much greater freedom."

What did Sturgeon say in her last announcement?

On Tuesday June 8, the First Minister encouraged Scots to accept their vaccine when offered and gave an update on the latest figures.

Yesterday marked exactly six months since the first Covid vaccination was given in Scotland and now over half of Scotland's population is fully vaccinated with two doses.

However Sturgeon continued to keep a caution a tone as cases went up by 50 per cent in the last week.

She added: "However, although cases are rising, the key question is the extent to which vaccination is weakening the link between the increase in new cases, and an increase in serious health harms.

"We continue to assess the data on this very closely - and, at this stage, we remain optimistic that vaccination will allow us to move progressively to a less restrictive way of dealing with the virus"

A further 695 covid cases were confirmed on Tuesday, representing 5% of those newly tested. 121 people were in hospital with a further 12 in ICU.
